Plotline:
Ved Vyas Tripathi aka Bhajan Kumar aka Billu (played by Vicky Kaushal) is a renowned devotional singer in a small town called Balrampur. He belongs to a staunch and conservative Pandit family comprising his father Pandit Siya Ram Tripathi (played by Kumud Mishra), his chacha Balak Ram Tripathi (played by Manoj Pahwa), Bua Sushila Kumari (Alka Amin), Chachi Hema (played by Sadiya Siddiqui) and his twin sister Gunja (played by Srishti Dixit).
Ved struggles to find love due to his profession but one day, he falls in love with bold and beautiful Jasmeet (played by Manushi Chhillar). One fine evening, a stranger arrives at their house and gives them a letter which states that Bhajan Kumar is actually a Muslim by birth.

The Great Indian Family Movie Review; What Do We Think?
After the box office debacle of Thugs of Hindostan, Vijay Krishna Acharya is back on a director’s chair with The Great Indian Family. He tries hard to deliver a family entertainer with dramatic moments but it falls flat. It’s a well-intented movie that talks the diversity of India but it doesn’t work.
The stereotypical portrayal of Muslims – kohl-lined eyes, burkhas and to get recognized from their attire – is cliched. The ‘Hindu-Muslim’ angle in the second half feels too stretched at times.
Vicky Kaushal does a great job as Bhajan Kumar. He is sincere, effortless and is a treat to watch. Vikcy has delivered a mature and refined act, however, he is not enough to save this mediocre movie.
Manushi Chhillar seems like an eye-candy who appears for two songs and a couple of scenes. She doesn’t have much to do or to bring on the table or to add to the screenplay. Her chemistry with Vicky is a lackluster.
On the other hand, if Vicky is the heart of the film, the supporting cast – Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Sadiya Siddiqui and Alka Amin – is the soul. They lend a great support to the narrative and we have no complains.
The songs are quite forgetful and the director keeps the narration simple with a runtime of less than 2 hours, which works for its favour. The dialogues are also average. Some of the scenes are funny but most of the jokes are bland.
HIT Or MISS?
The Great Indian Family is an average, preachy one-time-watch film solely for Vicky and the ensemble. The film tries to deliver an important message but it gets lost in the melodramatic narration.
